Today we sit down with Michael Rizoiu to discuss the mindset behind his racing, how he prepares for competition, and what continues to drive his pursuit of performance on the track.
Racing requires both physical and mental strength. How do you approach preparation before a race weekend?
Preparation is something I take very seriously because it directly affects performance. Physically, I focus on regular strength and endurance training. Neck strength, core stability, and stamina are extremely important because fatigue can quickly affect reaction time and precision in the car.
I also incorporate massage therapy into my routine. Before a race weekend I typically schedule a session that lasts between ninety minutes and two hours to loosen the muscles and prepare my body. I usually follow that with another session after the race weekend to help recovery.
Mentally, preparation is something I’m always working on. It’s an ongoing process of developing the right mindset and staying focused regardless of external circumstances.
Many drivers talk about the importance of mental strength. What does that mean to you personally?
Mental strength is about staying composed under pressure and not allowing mistakes or setbacks to affect your next decision.
In racing, things don’t always go perfectly. You might have a bad qualifying lap, a mechanical issue, or a difficult race situation. The ability to reset immediately and stay focused on the next moment is critical.
It also means performing when it matters most. Qualifying laps, race starts, and decisive moments during a race often determine the outcome. Being mentally prepared for those moments is a major part of being competitive.
How important is adaptability in motorsport?
Adaptability is one of the qualities that separates good drivers from great drivers.
Conditions change constantly. Weather can shift, tires degrade, setups may not be perfect, and sometimes the car simply behaves differently than expected. You have to be able to adjust your driving style, strategy, and mindset quickly.
Drivers who can adapt quickly are the ones who stay competitive throughout an entire race weekend.
Racing is often described as a mental chess game. How do you approach race strategy and decision making during a race?
Racing definitely has a strategic side. It’s not only about driving fast but also about understanding the bigger picture of the race.
You’re constantly thinking about tire management, fuel levels, positioning on track, and when to push or hold back. Reading the race correctly is extremely important.
There’s also risk assessment. Every move has consequences, so you have to judge whether an overtaking opportunity is worth the risk or if protecting your position is the smarter option.
What continues to motivate you to pursue racing at a high level?
For me, the motivation comes from the challenge itself.
Motorsport is one of the most demanding sports in the world because it requires so many different skills at the same time. There is always something new to improve, whether it’s technique, fitness, strategy, or mental preparation.
That constant pursuit of improvement is what makes racing so compelling.
