In Conversation with Michael Rizoiu

An Interview with the Endurance Racing Driver

For Michael Rizoiu, racing is not simply a sport. It is something deeply instinctive, a pursuit that feels almost inevitable. Based in Oakville, Ontario, Rizoui balances a career as an aerospace engineer working in the automotive sector while pursuing competitive endurance racing.

But behind the professional background and technical expertise lies something even more powerful: a mindset built around relentless improvement and an unwavering belief in his own potential.

We spoke with Michael about the origins of his passion for driving, the mental and physical demands of racing, and the ambition that continues to shape his journey in motorsport.

When did your connection with driving begin?

Michael’s relationship with cars began remarkably early.

“I think I was about three years old when my fascination with cars really started,” he recalls.

By the time he was six, he experienced driving for the first time. The sensation left an immediate impression.

“It was an incredible feeling. I remember thinking that I wanted to do more of it right away.”

Not long after, the idea of racing began to take shape.

“At around ten years old I realized that racing cars was something I truly wanted to do.”

How would you describe yourself as a competitor?

Michael describes his driving style as controlled but capable of shifting quickly when the moment demands it.

“I usually start smooth and precise, but at times my style becomes aggressive while still remaining controlled.”

More than anything, his confidence in his own ability stands out.

“There are many fast drivers out there, But I don’t believe there is a ceiling to my performance.”

What moment helped shape that mindset?

One defining moment came during a karting session at Mosport Kart Track.

Michael had the opportunity to drive a kart owned by a highly respected driver whose lap times had long set the benchmark for that track.

At first, Michael found himself struggling to match the pace. Despite dozens of laps and constant adjustments to his driving technique, he remained stuck about half a second behind the target lap time.

For the first time, doubt crept in.

“I genuinely wondered if maybe I wasn’t as good as I believed I was.”

But giving up was never an option.

Michael returned to the track with one goal: break through the barrier.

Within a few laps, something clicked. His lap times suddenly dropped dramatically, and by the end of the session he had gone nearly a full second faster than the benchmark time.

“That moment confirmed something for me. If another driver can do something under the same conditions, then I can do it too.”

What do people misunderstand about racing?

For those watching from the outside, racing can appear effortless. But Michael explains that the reality is far more demanding.

“People underestimate how physically intense it is. You’re dealing with heavy G-forces while maintaining extreme precision with the car.”

At the same time, the mental challenge is enormous.

“You are constantly processing information. Tire grip, braking points, the balance of the car, other drivers around you. You are feeling everything through the steering wheel and the seat.”

All of this takes place while operating at the edge of control.

“There is very little margin for error.”

What happens in the moments before a race begins?

Like many drivers, Michael experiences the familiar surge of nerves before the start.

“There are always butterflies and jitters.”

His approach is simple: clear the mind and focus on the fundamentals.

“Before the race starts you don’t know how things will unfold. Once the race begins, that uncertainty disappears and you settle into your rhythm.”

What motivates you to continue chasing this path?

Michael does not hesitate.

“I believe this is what I was born to do.”

Racing, for him, is not only about competition but about answering that internal calling.

“I’m building something meaningful, not just for myself but for my family, especially my daughter, and for everyone who has helped me get here.”

What are your ambitions moving forward?

In the near term, Michael’s focus is clear: competing at the highest level possible.

His immediate goal is to capture the Radical Cup championship, driving the Radical SR3 XX, a high downforce prototype-style car capable of generating enormous cornering forces.

Looking further ahead, his ambitions expand even further.

“In five years I see myself deeply embedded in motorsport, competing in top level series like the World Endurance Championship and potentially open-wheel categories.”

What does the perfect racing season look like to you?

Michael’s answer is direct.

“Total domination. No crashes, a podium in every race, and winning the championship.”

Closing

Motorsport has always rewarded drivers who combine talent with relentless determination. For Michael Rizoiu, that determination is at the core of his approach to racing.

His story is still unfolding, but one theme already stands out: an unwavering belief that his greatest performances are still ahead.

For a driver who sees racing not simply as a sport but as a calling, the journey is only just beginning.
